Swine Sale, Rodeo, Plant Auction, More at Hillsborough County Fair ...

The Hillsborough County Fair opens 10 a.m. today, Oct. 20., for a day filled with exhibits, shows, vendors, midway rides and more at the Hillsborough County? Fairgrounds in Dover.

Myke Morris has been a board member for the Hillsborough County Fair for years ? as his father was before him ? and has served as a both a past president and past chair.

"The fair is important because it gives all the citizens of Hillsborough County a chance to exhibit the things they have been working on all year, that they're proud of, and to compete for prizes and ribbons," Morris said. "And it brings the community together."

Morris made his comments at the start of the Oct. 19 Ranch Rodeo Show. A second rodeo show will be held tonight, Oct. 20, at 7 p.m. (a rodeo ticket is required as well).

"It's a real ranch rodeo, with real working cowboys riding real working ranch horses, and the cows are right off the Florida range," Morris said. "It's the real thing, it's not just a show."

Today's lineup of events includes as well a kids cooking contest, 4-H Foundation Barbecue, a plant auction, the second and final day of the Battle of the Bands competition, a swine sale, and more (see chart below).

General Admission to the fair costs $7 for adults and $5 for students, ages 6 through high school. Children ages 5 and under are admitted for free. There is no charge for parking.

Gates open at 10 a.m. and close at 11 p.m.

The five-day fair opened Oct. 17, at 5 p.m., and is scheduled to close Oct. 21, at 9 p.m. Each day features "continuous shows in the entertainment tent with Donny and Sandy and a talent showcase of variety acts."

Also at the fair: exhibits, shows, vendors and a midway.
