Paige: Lay off CU Buffs coach Jon Embree until 2014

BOULDER?? On rare days CU eats the bear; most days the bear eats CU. On this late September Saturday afternoon, the Bruins consumed the Buffaloes, who customarily are the banquet meat.

Colorado was munched again, 42-14.

UCLA wasn't some common, furry brown bear that wandered into the CU student housing area and climbed up a tree, was tranquilized and hauled away.

The Bruins have turned back into a quality Pac-12 team under coach Jim Mora this season.

The Buffs are in the same conference with the Bruins, but not in the same league, or class.

"At times, we are overmatched," CU coach Jon Embree said. Practically all the time.

Check back, though, in 2014, when the bears pause in Boulder again.

The Buffaloes will be all grown up by then.

How's that for a positive Colorado spin?

For their 2012 Pac-12 home opener, the Buffs offered 10 starters who are sophomores and freshmen (true or redshirt), 24 players on their two-deep chart who are in their first two seasons and at least 48 players who could be with CU when UCLA returns in two seasons.

And, perhaps, the Folsom playing Field will be level at that time. If not, Colorado will have to reconsider ? once more.

The Buffs still stumble rather carelessly (two terrible turnovers) ? as we have seen this season against three schools from cities in California (Los Angeles, Sacramento and Fresno). Somehow, and don't ask anyone how, the Buffs did win in Washington state.

This is going to be a two- or three-victory season, best-case scenario, for CU, so get used to it in 2012 and, in all likelihood, 2013. Don't make postseason party reservations.

But 2014 will, and properly should, determine where the Buffs, Embree and his coaching staff stand or sit ? as bear kibbles or big-game hunters.

In two years, UCLA will revisit, along with Arizona State, Oregon State, Utah and Washington. The Buffs will travel to Arizona, Cal and a couple of big dogs that eat ? Oregon and USC. The 2014 nonconference schedule consists of CSU, Massachusetts and Hawaii. You'd think the Buffs could win eight games and be in a bowl not sponsored by auto parts or a lizard.

Lay off Embree until then. Lay off athletic director Mike Bohn until then. It's not happening until then. I'm more impatient than most, but Embree inherited scorched turf from coach What's-his-name & Son, and deserves to have four full years to prove himself.

The current six-season-plus stretch with 26-54 record is the worst since the Buffs were 20-56-1 from 1978-84 under Bill Mallory, Chuck Fairbanks and Bill McCartney. (Mallory and McCartney were at the team reunion over the weekend.)

As McCartney, who was given enough seasons to prove himself, and did, told me recently, the key to success at CU is recruiting, and the key to recruiting is hiring assistant coaches who can recruit. Embree surrounded himself with recruiters. He could use a couple of more assistants who can coach. I think Embree is missing an associate head coach who has been around the Pac-10 (12) for a while.

Somebody like Rick Neuheisel.

Not Rick, of course, but somebody with a similar r?sum? and a better grasp of matters. I suggested to CU athletic officials in the offseason that Fisher DeBerry, the former Air Force coach, be brought up to Boulder as an adviser. As usual, my recommendation was rejected. How about Paul Wulff, who was at Eastern Washington and Washington State for years before being fired. He's a quasi-offensive assistant with the 49ers. The Buffs could use a veteran's touch.

They also still need more speed at the skill positions, and they've got to find wide receivers and, certainly, a high-class quarterback who can compete in the Pac-12.

They Buffs are just too inexperience and way too ... too average.

It was evident in the first half when UCLA raced, literally, to a 21-7 lead. The CU students must not have gotten the memo that there was a football game starting at 4 p.m. Saturday. Several thousand didn't arrive until well after the game kicked off; several thousand didn't bother to arrive at all, although it was the kind of immaculate afternoon that has lured the world to live and study in this state.

Actually, the Buffs were somewhat competitive for a half against the superior Bruins, despite only 18 net yards rushing in the first half and 2-of-15 third-down conversions overall.

Afterward, Embree's news conference was televised on the mammoth scoreboard screens. His words echoed in a totally empty stadium.

On this day, like other days in the Pac-12, and the Big 12 before, the bear ate the Buffaloes.

Israelis are prepared ? and not ? for an Iran attack

Bernat Armangue / AP

An Israeli woman talks on the phone after collecting gas masks for her family in a shopping mall in Jerusalem in this Aug. 22 photo.

By Martin Fletcher, NBC News correspondent

TEL AVIV ? Did you know:

  • If a bomb explodes near you with a little bang, that's a sign it is carrying chemical or biological weapons? A loud bang means a conventional warhead.
  • If an attack is chemical, you will know right away? But if it's biological you'll only find out after a few days.
  • If it is nuclear, you should lie down and cover your head? And don't get up when the first blast wave passes over you because it will be followed by a second wave.

Useful, eh?

All these facts are good to know if you are in Israel and war with Iran, and its proxies Hezbollah and Hamas, were to break out around you.

Report: Iran mulls 'pre-emptive attack' against Israel; commander warns of 'World War III'

Or if something happened with Syria, Iran's ally, which has large stockpiles of biological and conventional weapons.

With the latest opinion polls showing that half of Israelis fear for the continued existence of their state if war breaks out with Iran, and with more than half rating the chance of such a war within a year as "medium" or "high,? the more you know about what the war would entail, the better.

In an attempt to convey what he sees as a threat to Israel's existence, Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu used a cartoon to illustrate how close he says Iran is to developing a nuclear weapon. In a speech at the United Nations General Assembly he asked the world to help stop them. NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports.

Here are some more facts:

  • If you suck a bead made of castor oil, it could kill you. It contains ricin, a lethal poison.
  • After Chernobyl, it took 25 years before Welsh sheep could be eaten because the nuclear radiation settled over Wales as it drifted most of the way round the world.
  • And cigarettes contain polonium 210, the poison used to murder the Soviet ex-spy Alexander Litvinenko.

Probably no country in the world is as prepared as Israel for such an attack, with every home built in the last 21 years possessing a mandatory bomb shelter. City centers have vast public shelters with special rooms set up for non-conventional attacks. And citizens are instructed in how to protect their bomb shelters against chemical and biological warfare.

Mistakes happen
But mistakes can happen, as I can personally attest.?

One evening in the winter of 1991 during the first Gulf War, with Iraqi Scud missiles rocketing over Jordan toward Israel, the bomb alarm sounded. My family quickly locked themselves in our bomb shelter, and I raced through the dark, silent streets to broadcast from our NBC News studio.

Israel's Netanyahu: Draw 'clear red line' to stop Iran from getting nuclear weapons

This had become routine. I spent all night in the studio, responding to the many alarms, and went home around 5a.m. I didn't check on the family because I knew where the Scuds had fallen and none were near my home.

This one time, however, with 30 minutes to go before my next live broadcast hit, I had a sense that something was wrong. For the first time after an attack, I called home to see how my wife and my three sons, all aged below six, were faring.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu tells the UN general assembly Thursday that sanctions are not stopping Iran's nuclear program.

No answer. I called again. No answer. Twenty-five minutes to go before my next ?live hit? on TV with Tom Brokaw. I felt sick with worry. What could have happened?

I ran downstairs, jumped into my car and raced home. I figured a 10-minute drive, five minutes at home and 10 minutes back, I'd be in the studio with seconds to spare.

Life-saving decision
Ends up, because of that calculation, I saved my family's lives.

When the all-clear sounded, my wife, our three sons, my sister-in-law and the dog, a schnauzer called Tofi, couldn't get out of the shelter.

The heavy steel lock would not budge. They hung on it and pulled and tried and tried but could not open the door. When I arrived home, about two hours after they had entered the bomb shelter, I heard faint cries of "help, help."

Instead of pushing the handle up, they had been pulling it down, locking it instead of opening it.

I was able to open the door from the outside and all was well.

But if I had stuck to my usual routine and not called home and just returned at 5 a.m., after leaving them at 8 p.m. the night before, they would have been dead.

It's simple math: An adult breathes about one cubic meter of air per hour, children more. Five people in a small room of about nine cubic meters would begin to lose air after two hours. Seven hours? They'd have all been dead.

A miracle? Sixth sense? Whatever, it's a warning of what can go wrong in times of stress. And however prepared Israelis are for what awaits them, accidents happen. When Iraq attacked Israel in 1991, far more people died of heart attacks than Scud rockets.

Country on edge
Since that time, every apartment built in Israel must have a blast-proof room that protects citizens from conventional blasts and also, with plastic and tape, can protect against chemical and biological weapons too. Walls and doors are approximately 8-12 inches thick and doors and windows are airtight.

Every citizen has, in theory, a gas mask. In practice, there aren't enough to go around.

Everybody asks, do you think there will be war with Iran? Nobody knows, and if you see Israel?s crowded cafes, the bustling streets, the crammed beaches, you may think that nobody cares.

Yet Israel is a country on edge. Most seem to have bought Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu?s line that the price to pay to stop Iran from building a nuclear bomb is much lower than the price to be paid if Iran has the bomb.

Fueling those thoughts are memories of what happened when the Nazis killed 6 million Jews. Today, there are approximately 6 million Jews in Israel. Few Israelis can argue against Netanyahu's insistence of: Never again.

And yet, I don't know anyone here who has prepared their bomb shelter. They're all a mess, used to store boxes, suitcases, footballs and wine. They are used as computer rooms, bicycle storage, play rooms. The attitude is, for the most part, we'll worry about it when the time comes.

Until then, live life.

Wall St Week Ahead: Bulls eye Spain, Bernanke and jobs

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Wall Street will open October with a busy week, highlighted by low expectations for global manufacturing data and the U.S. jobs report. Any positive surprises may help lift the market.

Spain is the wild card. And if it's played well, then the bulls might dance.

The S&P 500 <.inx><.spx> finished its third positive quarter in the last four on Friday, despite suffering its largest weekly percentage decline since June. For the past three months, the S&P 500 gained 5.9 percent - its best third quarter since 2010. In contrast, the index was down 1.3 percent for the week.

The benchmark S&P 500 earlier this month reached its highest level since late 2007. Yet uncertainty remains over whether stocks can hold their gains against the headwinds of a struggling economy. That explains, in part, the retreat over the last several days.

The S&P 500 hit a high of 1,474.51 in mid-September before pulling back by a bit more than 2 percent. A run at 1,500 seems possible, but the flurry of economic and world events ahead probably will prevent a major advance in the coming week.

Bulls are betting that last week's Spanish budget proposals will be a preamble to a bailout request by Mariano Rajoy's government. The move would be seen as a first step to get the finances of the euro zone's fourth-largest economy in order and would clear some of the market uncertainty regarding the euro zone crisis.

Monetary policy is also on the list of market catalysts this week. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke is scheduled to speak on Monday and the minutes of the latest FOMC meeting are set for release on Thursday. The week's agenda includes meetings of the European Central Bank, the Bank of England and the Bank of Japan.

Brian Jacobsen, chief portfolio strategist at Wells Fargo Funds Management in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, said he believes "we could see a rebound" this week "if we get some of the stars aligning and have Spain ask for a bailout, the ECB announcing favorable terms for that bailout, and if we see the Bank of Japan announce further monetary intervention.

"If Spain and the ECB don't deliver, we could set ourselves up for a further lateral move in the markets," Jacobsen added. "A negative would be if Rajoy flat-out denies that they need a bailout."

The ECB and BOJ are set to meet on Thursday, with the Bank of Japan's meeting extending until Friday.

FACTORIES, JOBS AND THE U.S. ELECTION

Chinese factory and business conditions data will kick off a numbers-heavy calendar for markets. Manufacturing PMI, due on Monday, is expected to show a second straight month of contraction.

A snapshot of U.S. manufacturing activity will be provided on Monday when the Institute for Supply Management releases its September index. The September ISM reading is expected to show another month of contraction, but at a slightly slower pace than in August. On Wednesday, the ISM will release its U.S. services-sector Purchasing Managers' Index, which could show a slight deceleration in the pace of growth in the non-manufacturing sector.

"We have Chinese economic data over the weekend, and we'll see how markets react on Monday," said Wasif Latif, vice president of equity investments at San Antonio, Texas-based USAA Investment Management.

"It seems like the market is bracing for bad numbers, meaning if they're not as bad, it could be market-positive," Latif said.

Non-farm payrolls for September, due on Friday, are forecast to gain 115,000, while the U.S. unemployment rate is seen ticking up 0.1 percent from August to 8.2 percent in September.

The jobs data will come on the heels of the first of three U.S. presidential debates, scheduled for Wednesday night.

With just one month to go before election day on November 6, Wall Street will watch the economic data more closely than it usually does. In a year when the incumbent president is campaigning for a second term, the country's economic numbers tend to become more positive as election day approaches.

The U.S. stock market also tends to gain in years when incumbents are re-elected, according to the Stock Trader's Almanac.

For the year, the Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> is up 10 percent, while the Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> is up 14.6 percent and the Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> is up 19.6 percent.

Recent poll numbers point to a strengthening lead by President Barack Obama, but a weak payrolls reading could give some hope to Republican challenger Mitt Romney.

"If Romney doesn't turn the ship with a very strong (debate)performance, the president is going to win," said Jack de Gan, chief investment officer at Harbor Advisory Corp in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

He said the trend in the polls has taken away some of the market uncertainty regarding the presidential election. He added that an ECB- or Spain-related headline out of Europe on Thursday could overcome almost anything that would happen Wednesday night during the debate.

"I think the market is coming to terms with the fact the president is ahead, and unless something significant changes, (he) will prevail."

Americana revisited: Rockwell's models reuniting

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) ? Don Trachte's cowlick has been tamed. Mary Hall is no longer a towhead. Butch Corbett is still thin, but not the beanpole he once was. And Tom Paquin's carrot top is thinner and grayer.

Twenty or so people who were children when they posed in the 1940s and '50s for their neighbor Norman Rockwell in the Vermont town of Arlington are reuniting there Saturday to share their memories of the great American artist who once lived in their midst.

Rockwell captured scenes of everyday life in his paintings and illustrations for covers of the Saturday Evening Post, for the Boy Scouts and for its publication Boys' Life, art now considered the very definition of Americana. He would pay his neighbors $5 a pop to appear in Hallmark cards, in calendars and on magazine covers that ended up gracing the coffee tables and littering the tree houses of millions of magazine readers young and old.

"The Saturday Evening Post came out weekly, and we couldn't wait to get it to see what was on the cover," said Hall, who posed for Rockwell four times. "You could always recognize who it was."

She appeared as a blond girl wrapped in a quilt and being carried out of a flood by a Boy Scout in an image that became a cover of Boys' Life, and as a teenager in a skirt, white blouse, bobby socks and loafers on a Post cover from 1948. It was called "Christmas Homecoming" and showed people welcoming home a young man who's carrying a suitcase full of dirty laundry.

An estimated 300 people from the area modeled for Rockwell during his 14 years in the southern Vermont town. Of the 70 or so still living, the oldest is 93 (he can't make it to the reunion). Many still live in and around Arlington.

Among the models planning to join in is Mary Whalen, who posed for the popular image of a rugged-looking school girl with braids and a black eye, waiting outside a principal's office.

The former models have gotten together before, but this weekend is special. They have been invited to view a new gallery of Rockwell prints and memorabilia that is taking the place of a recently closed Rockwell museum. The new owners are treating them to a turkey lunch in honor of Rockwell's famous painting of an excited family gathered for Thanksgiving dinner.

"I think it's important that the models keep the tradition of the image that Vermont, Arlington in particular, was important in Norman Rockwell's biography. That while he lived in Arlington he did his best work, probably ... and his local models were Arlington people," said James "Buddy" Edgerton, 82, who lived next door to Rockwell, his wife and three sons and modeled for him at least a dozen times.

Rockwell was a full-fledged member of the town, attending school basketball games and square dances, and had a great sense of humor, his neighbors recall. But as one of America's foremost artists, he could be as precise as any high-fashion photographer.

He would first have the models photographed and then would sketch a drawing. Sometimes the session in his studio took minutes, sometimes several hours. He always had a pipe in his mouth, and he joked around with the kids to make them comfortable.

"Rockwell had these images in his head, and he wanted you to smile or be wide-eyed in a certain way. You have to be a little actor, you see, and I probably was a little embarrassed," said Trachte, who was 5 or 6 when he posed for a painting of a little boy and girl in pajamas, holding hands and peering up at Santa Claus. Years later, Trachte and his brother found a Rockwell hidden in a wall at his parents' house; "Breaking Home Ties" sold at auction in 2006 for $15.4 million.

Rockwell knew just what he wanted, instructing the children to sit or stand in certain positions with particular expressions and to wear certain clothing, often providing Scout uniforms, or in one case, the velvet outfit that Hall wore for the cover of an edition of the book "Little Lord Fauntleroy."

"I find his detail just amazing," said Hall, whose father was a real estate agent who sold Rockwell his first and second home in town.

She noted that Rockwell managed to paint the small piece of tape around her leg from a sprained ankle that appeared above her bobby sock: "He didn't miss the details."

Edgerton ? who went on to write the memoir "The Unknown Rockwell: A Portrait of Two American Families," about a farm boy growing up next door to the Rockwells ? modeled for his neighbor mostly as a Scout, with his image published in four calendars.

The last time he modeled was in 1964, after Rockwell had moved about 65 miles away to Stockbridge, Mass., now home to the Norman Rockwell Museum. Edgerton appeared as a Scoutmaster with his son, then 9, in a painting called "Growth of a Leader," showing four profiles of a Scout progressing from a child to an adult with a graying sideburn ? much like Edgerton has today.

"He was a wonderful guy," Edgerton said. "He made you feel you were the most important person in the world when you were doing it."

Five Creative and Quirky Costume Ideas You Can Make at Home

Homemade costumes can be outstandingly creative, using simple supplies that are found in the average home.

Halloween is around the corner, and it?s time to start thinking about costumes! ?Most people head to the local costume shop or buy a?costume online at places like CostumeExpress, Amazon, or even Etsy. But sometimes it?s fun to be original and make your own costume at home. Homemade costumes can be outstandingly creative, using simple supplies that are found in the average home.

With most of these costumes a generic base layer of clothing is necessary. If possible, start with a solid color top and bottom. Any neutral color, such as black, white, or grey, is best, but other shades are fine if there are no last minute choices.

A Leaf Pile

A Halloween costume can easily made out of fallen leaves. Most yards are filled with them in October, and they can be attached to clothing with stick glue. Other times of the year, look for downed tree limbs or shrubbery clippings to find a costume that takes you back to nature. If you have the time to do a little shopping, you can also buy colorful fake leaves at most craft stores. These won?t crumble as easily, so your costume will last longer.

Conjoined Twins

If you need a pair costumes, you can easily kill two birds with one stone. Place both people in an over-sized shirt, each with an arm wrapped around the other?s back. The evening may end up being a bit close for comfort, so make sure both individuals are willing to work together!

Something Sweet

Affix as many different types of candy as possible to a white t-shirt. You could call your costume a Candy Dish, a Sweet Tooth, or, if you are willing to give away pieces of candy, a Trick-or-Treater in Reverse.

The Grandfather Clock

A brown sheet or piece of cloth can be easily turned into a cloak for an evening. To do this, fold one edge of the sheet into an eight-inch section. Place the cloth around your shoulders, lifting the folded section above your head. Then tie the cloak around your neck with a piece of string or fabric. Using makeup or washable markers, draw a clock face on your own. Affix clock hands made from construction paper or felt to your nose. You can also take this in a conceptual direction if the supplies are more readily available.

The Cleaning Supply Closet

With a roll of duct tape and a closet full of cleaning supplies, a costume is born. Small cleaning supplies, like sponges and brushes, can be adhered to clothing with tape folded over on itself. Find bottles that are mostly empty, clean them out well, and attach them to clothing in the same manner. With any open spaces, safety pin rags or paper towels to clothing. For added effect, carry a broom and dust pan. The costume will be an original and, as an added bonus, you are ready to help with cleanup after the party.

What creative costumes have you come up with?

World Chicken Festival offers something to crow about

Courtesy World Chicken Festival

The World Chicken Festival in London, Ky., has the world's largest stainless-steel skillet, which measures 10.5 feet across and uses 300 gallons of cooking oil to cook 600 chicken quarters at a time.

By Rob Lovitt, NBC News contributor

The folks at the International Olympic Committee would probably disagree, but for sports-minded travelers, it?s not too late to experience the London Olympics.

The London Kentucky Olympics, that is, will take place in the town of the same name this weekend. You won?t find a balance beam or high-jump bar, but for fans of burping contests, armpit serenades and toilet-lid horseshoes, it?s clearly the place to be.

?Well, the Olympics were in London, England, this year, so we decided to have the London Kentucky Olympics,? said Elaine Harris, executive secretary of the London-Laurel County Tourist Commission. ?It?s a cousin to the redneck games ? a real close cousin.?

It?s also the newest addition to the town?s most famous event, the World Chicken Festival?(Sept. 27?30). Now in its 23rd year, the fowl-themed festivities attract more than 150,000 people each year and feature enough offbeat activities to earn the honorific of Overhead Bin?s Weird Festival of the Month for September.

The event owes its existence to a bit of fortuitous culinary history. In 1930, an itinerant entrepreneur named Harland Sanders began serving meals to the travelers who stopped at his gas station in the nearby town of Corbin, Ky. Working from a ?secret blend of 11 herbs and spices,? he eventually opened a full-service caf?, got commissioned as a colonel by the governor and founded a restaurant chain that now has 17,000 locations around the world.

August's Weird Festival of the Month: Haggis hurling at the Highland Games

To commemorate that heritage, town boosters set out to create a family-oriented festival with rides, contests, craft booths and, of course, plenty of chicken. ?The first one was pretty small,? said Harris, ?but within a couple of years, it took off and was just unreal.?

Today, the festivities include a parade, car show, live music and poultry-themed activities for all ages.

There's a $100 prize for the Rooster Crowing, Clucking and Strutting Contest at the World Chicken Festival.

Have a knack for chicken mimicry? The Rooster Crowing, Clucking and Strutting Contest is your chance to strut your stuff, flap your wings and squawk your way to $100 cash and barnyard bragging rights. Be forewarned, though, there are some grade A competitors in this particular coop.

?It?s not just crowing. It?s the strutting, it?s what a chicken does when it eats and the way it acts when it lays an egg,? said veteran clucker-strutter Cameron Humfleet, who took the top spot two years ago and is hoping to regain his title this year.

?Last year I got beat by a guy who came in and sang 'Smoke on the Water,' but in a clucking way,? he told NBC News. ?I definitely wasn?t expecting that.?

Courtesy World Chicken Festival

An activity for the kiddos during the World Chicken Festival is the Chicken Scratch, in which kids hunt for dollar bills and other prizes hidden in a 600-pound pile of flour.

Meanwhile, the kids will be competing in a variety of pullet-sized events, including the Chicken Scratch, in which the little ones hunt for dollar bills and other prizes hidden in a 600-pound pile of flour.

?They end up looking just like chickens that you roll in flour before you fry them,? said contest coordinator Rodney Hendrickson.

Fortunately, the organizers reserve that last step for the real deal, taking advantage of the festival?s most impressive claim to fame: the world?s largest stainless-steel skillet. Measuring 10.5 feet across, the 700-pound behemoth uses 300 gallons of cooking oil to cook 600 chicken quarters at a time.

In fact, over the course of the four-day festival, volunteers will cook 7,000 pieces of chicken. As with the Colonel?s original, the recipe is a highly classified secret. All the organizers will share is that it involves 375 pounds of flour, 75 pounds of salt, 30 pounds of pepper, 30 pounds of paprika and ?special ingredients.?

Whatever those special ingredients are, they must be doing the trick given the thousands of people who descend on the town every year. Some, no doubt, come for the craft booths and live music; others, for the kids? games and carnival rides. And this year, some will probably come to get in touch with their inner redneck at the London Kentucky Olympics.

?Hey, everybody likes to eat chicken,? said Hendrickson, ?even rednecks.?

Sony ties up with Olympus, takes 11 percent stake

TOKYO (AP) ? Sony is expanding its sprawling electronics to movies business empire with a new venture ? looking inside the human body.

The company on Friday said it will spend 50 billion yen ($640 million) for an 11 percent stake in Olympus Corp., an embattled maker of endoscopes, which are the long thin camera-equipped instruments that allow medical professionals to peer inside the body.

The deal was widely expected as Sony president Kazuo Hirai had expressed interest in moving into the medical equipment business.

Olympus Corp. is the world's biggest maker of endoscopes and is also known for its cameras. It has been on shaky ground after its British chief executive Michael Woodford turned whistleblower and helped unearth a scandal involving a systematic cover-up of massive losses.

Sony Corp. has its own problems and is hoping new businesses will be part of its turnaround. Sony has reported losses for four straight years as it fell behind in portable music players, flat-panel TVs and smartphones. Sony's red ink for the latest fiscal year through March was the worst in its 66-year history.

The two companies said they will set up a new medical equipment company together later this year, 51 percent owned by Sony and the rest by Olympus.

The alliance between Sony and Olympus will focus on the camera business as well, and both sides can benefit from sharing their technology, and working together to become more competitive, they said. In such alliances, companies can share in procurement on parts, boosting their bargaining power with suppliers and lowering costs.

"I will do my best to make this meaningful and profitable for both Olympus and Sony," Hirai said in a statement. Sony will become the biggest shareholder in Olympus after acquiring the 11 percent stake.

Olympus President Hiroyuki Sasa said working with Sony will help shore up Olympus' finances, and that its endoscope business would benefit from Sony's image-sensor technology.

Sasa and Hirai plan a joint news conference Monday morning in Tokyo, where they will likely face questions about how two troubled Japanese companies getting together might lead to them competing more successfully on the global stage.

Earlier this week, Sasa was at the Tokyo District Court to enter a guilty plea for Olympus, along with three former executives who faced charges as individuals, in the opening session of a trial into the fraudulent financial reports.

Olympus has said it hid 117.7 billion yen ($1.5 billion) in investment losses dating to the 1990s.

Prosecutors outlined in detail the elaborate schemes concocted over the years, using overseas bank accounts, paper companies and transactions controlled behind-the-scenes, all to keep massive losses off the company books.

Peter Weller Talks Star Trek Into Darkness

robocop peter weller Peter Weller Talks Robocop Reboot And Working With J.J. Abrams

Actor Peter Weller?really is just a stand up guy. While the rest of us complain about how the Robocop?reboot looks pretty damn stupid, Weller instead wishes the film well.

Speaking with I Am Rogue (via Comic Book Movie), Weller said that the franchise is not a part of his life anymore, but he hopes they make a good movie.?He also admits that actor Joel Kinnaman, who takes on the titular role that Weller originated, is going to ?have to pull up his boots.?

Indeed.

Weller was far more excited though to discuss his as-yet-unnamed role in the Star Trek sequel, Star Trek Into Darkness. While he cannot reveal what his character or his role is in the new film, he had nothing but praise for director J.J. Abrams:

?[Abrams is] the best, one of the greatest human beings ever [and] one of the most talented people I have ever worked with.?

High praise indeed from a man who has worked with David Cronenberg and Paul Verhoeven.

We will know soon enough what Peter Weller has in store for us in Star Trek Into Darkness?as the film hits theatres May 17, 2013.

As for the Robocop reboot??Early buzz on the film isn?t too hot but on August 9th, 2013 we?ll finally get a chance to see how it turned out.

Secrets Revealed: How to Fight even Prevent a Cold

25 September 2012 (8 hours ago) 41 views No Comment

Cold and Flu season is practically upon us.?? You may have already succumbed to the first stuffy nose of Autumn.? Today we will reveal our ?Pregnancy Awareness Month? Mom Approved? secrets on how to fight a cold.? Who knows, you might even increase your probability of success in preventing a cold from attacking your home and family.

Mom?s know that colds are no fun, and they can last FOREVER!? Seems like there is nothing slower than the pace of a runny nose.? And if you are pregnant, ugh!? Most of the OTC medications that you may have used in the past are off limits, check with your medical provider before using any medication when pregnant.? For babies and toddlers, even children, same thing, before you buy any cold medicine from the drug store, talk to your pediatrician.? Dr. Greene has blogged about concerns that some OTC decongestants might not work that well on babies and children, and can pose a potential overdose risk.? Read more about that here.

Below are some of our tips, and although we aren?t doctors or nurses, we share some kitchen table wisdom.? Our secrets revealed ? prevent a cold, cure a cold.

Tips from Moms when you have a cold:

  1. Rest ? it?s restorative
  2. Chicken soup ? that?s code for hydrate with: water, juice, caffeine free tea, broth.? A homemade popsicle works for toddlers and kids. Increase nursing or bottle intervals with your baby. Fluids should break up mucus.
  3. Moisture -? use a vaporizer (cold or hot mist), this is for adults and the kiddos. I wrote a cool post about this last flu season, check it here.
  4. Vitamin C (check doses for children with your doctor), you can take an Emergen-C pack to boost, and you mix it with water so you hydrate and add C simultaneously ? Woot!? Oh, and they make versions for children ? Double Woot!
  5. Probiotics have been shown to reduce the length of a cold, and even to prevent one.? Say wa?!? Another blog post from our P.A.M. Advisor, Dr. Greene on the evidence supporting using probiotics to fight a cold.
  6. Echinacea and Homeopathics ? we have zero data to support this (I?m sure there is some, but I won?t be citing any here), we tend to reach for it within the first 48 hours of symptoms and believe it helps.? (For Echinacea some brands have children?s versions that are alcohol free, preggo moms can use that too.? BTW, Homeopathics are FDA approved, check the packaging and even better, talk to a qualified homeopathic practitioner for suggested remedies).
  7. Blow you nose ? tissue, nasal nettie, and the nasal aspirator for babies: get the mucus OUT before it thickens, settles in and creates an infection.

Tips from Moms to Prevent a Cold:

  1. Hand washing ? with real soap and water, if all else fails waterless soap will do
  2. Probiotics ? daily during Flu & Cold Season (October thru March) ? Check out Dr. Greene?s blog on the topic, also hyperlinked above.
  3. Rest ? remember, it?s restorative? (this includes making sure babies and toddlers get their naps and a full night?s sleep)

Again, we are just mom?s here at Pregnancy Awareness Month?.? We aren?t doctors and we don?t even play one on TV.? So, talk to your medical provider, do some reading on your own, and heck, ask your mom or grannie.? And share with us, What is your favorite cold remedy?? What do you do to prevent a cold?

Benjamin Franklin ? ?An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.?? (I think he?s quoting his mom!!!)

Einstein's brain is now interactive iPad app

7 hrs.

The brain that revolutionized physics now can be downloaded as an app for $9.99. But it won't help you win at Angry Birds.

While Albert Einstein's genius isn't included, an exclusive iPad application launched Tuesday promises to make detailed images of his brain more accessible to scientists than ever before. Teachers, students and anyone who's curious also can get a look.

A medical museum under development in Chicago obtained funding to scan and digitize nearly 350 fragile and priceless slides made from slices of Einstein's brain after his death in 1955. The application will allow researchers and novices to peer into the eccentric Nobel winner's brain as if they were looking through a microscope.

"I can't wait to find out what they'll discover," said Steve Landers, a consultant for the National Museum of Health and Medicine Chicago who designed the app. "I'd like to think Einstein would have been excited."

After Einstein died, a pathologist named Thomas Harvey performed an autopsy, removing the great man's brain in hopes that future researchers could discover the secrets behind his genius.

Harvey gave samples to researchers and collaborated on a 1999 study published in the Lancet. That study showed a region of Einstein's brain ? the parietal lobe ? was 15 percent wider than normal. The parietal lobe is important to the understanding of math, language and spatial relationships.

The new iPad app may allow researchers to dig even deeper by looking for brain regions where the neurons are more densely connected than normal, said Dr. Phillip Epstein, a Chicago-area neuroscientist and consultant for the museum.

But because the tissue was preserved before modern imaging technology, it may be difficult for scientists to figure out exactly where in Einstein's brain each slide originated. Although the new app organizes the slides into general brain regions, it doesn't map them with precision to an anatomical model.

"They didn't have MRI. We don't have a three-dimensional model of the brain of Einstein, so we don't know where the samples were taken from," said researcher Jacopo Annese of the Brain Observatory at the University of California, San Diego. What's more, the 1-inch-by-3-inch Einstein slides on the app represent only a fraction of the entire brain, Annese said.

Annese has preserved and digitized another famous brain, that of Henry Molaison, who died in 2008 after living for decades with profound amnesia. Known as "H.M." in scientific studies, Molaison participated during his life in research that revealed new insights on learning and memory.

A searchable website with images of more than 2,400 slides of Molaison's entire brain will be available to the public in December, Annese said.

"There will be another Einstein and we'll do it like H.M.," Annese predicted. For now, he said, it's exciting that the Einstein brain tissue has been preserved digitally before the slides deteriorate or become damaged. The app will spark interest in the field of brain research, just because it's Einstein, he said.

"It's a beautiful collection to have opened up to the public," Annese said.

Some may question whether Einstein would have wanted images of his remains sold to non-scientists for $9.99.

"There's been a lot of debate over what Einstein's intentions were," museum board member Jim Paglia said. "We know he didn't want a circus made of his remains. But he understood the value to research and science to study his brain, and we think we've addressed that in a respectful manner."

Paglia said the app could "inspire a whole new generation of neuroscientists."

Proceeds from sales will go to the U.S. Department of Defense's National Museum of Health and Medicine in Silver Spring, Md., and to the Chicago satellite museum, which is set to open in 2015 with interactive exhibits and the museum's digital collections.

Bizarre tumor case may lead to custom cancer care

It's a medical nightmare: a 24-year-old man endures 350 surgeries since childhood to remove growths that keep coming back in his throat and have spread to his lungs, threatening his life. Now doctors have found a way to help him by way of a scientific coup that holds promise for millions of cancer patients.

The bizarre case is the first use in a patient of a new discovery: how to keep ordinary and cancerous cells alive indefinitely in the lab.

The discovery allows doctors to grow "mini tumors" from each patient's cancer in a lab dish, then test various drugs or combinations on them to see which works best. It takes only a few cells from a biopsy and less than two weeks to do, with materials and methods common in most hospitals.

Although the approach needs much more testing against many different types of cancer, researchers think it could offer a cheap, simple way to personalize treatment without having to analyze each patient's genes.

"We see a lot of potential for it," said one study leader, Dr. Richard Schlegel, pathology chief at Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center in Washington. "Almost everyone could do it easily."

An independent expert agreed.

For infections, it's routine to grow bacteria from a patient in lab dishes to see which antibiotics work best, Dr. George Q. Daley of Children's Hospital Boston and the Harvard Stem Cell Institute said in an email. "But this has never been possible with cancer cells because they don't easily grow in culture," he said.

The new technique may reveal in advance whether a person would be helped by a specific chemotherapy, without risking side effects and lost time if the drug doesn't work. "Pretty nifty," Daley wrote.

In the case of the 24-year-old, described in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine, lab-dish tests suggested that a drug used to treat a type of blood cancer and some other unrelated conditions might help.

It's not a drug that doctors would have thought to try, because the man technically does not have cancer. But his lung tumor shrank after a few months of treatment, and he has been stable for more than a year. He still has to have operations to remove throat growths that keep coming back, but only about once every five months.

The man, an information technology specialist in suburban Washington who asked to remain anonymous to protect his privacy, has recurrent respiratory papillomatosis, or RRP. It's usually due to infection at birth with certain types of a virus, HPV, that causes genital warts.

The condition causes wartlike growths in the throat, usually around the voice box. These growths usually are noncancerous but can turn malignant, and even benign ones can prove fatal if they spread to the lungs. The main treatment is surgery, usually with lasers to vaporize the growths and keep them from choking off the airway or making it hard to talk.

About 10,000 or more people in the U.S. have the disease, said Jennifer Woo, president of the RRP Foundation. Woo, 29, is a medical student at Georgetown and one of the researchers on the study. She also has the condition but said it is confined to her throat and has required only about 20 surgeries so far.

The man in the study has a much more serious case.

"I was diagnosed when I was 3 or 4. At first, I had to have surgery every 7 to 10 days," the man said in a phone interview. "I get short of breath and my voice will get more hoarse."

Two years ago, the growths to his lungs became extensive and life-threatening, and his physician, Dr. Scott Myers, described the condition at a meeting of Georgetown hospital specialists. "It's crushing the airway," Myers said.

Doctors suggested that the new lab method pioneered by Schlegel and others might help. It borrows an idea from stem cell researchers: adding mouse cells for nourishment, plus a chemical that prevents cell death to an ordinary lab culture medium. That enabled healthy and cancerous cells to keep growing indefinitely.

Researchers grew "mini tumors" from the man's lung mass and from healthy tissue and screened various drugs against them. One proved ineffective. Another worked against the tumor but at too high a dose to be safe. The third did the trick.

A similar approach could let doctors screen drugs for cancer patients.

"What could be more personalized than taking this person's cell, growing it in culture, finding a drug to treat them and then treat them?" said Doug Melton, co-director of the Harvard Stem Cell Institute. The Georgetown method gives an answer quickly enough that it could save lives, he said.

Tyler Jacks, a cancer researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and former president of the American Association for Cancer Research, said the next step is to show that this could work for many different cancers and that it leads to better outcomes in patients.

"It seems to have worked in this one instance, but other tumors might prove to be more challenging," he said.

The National Institutes of Health paid for much of this work and has already sent research teams to Georgetown to learn the method. About a dozen other universities have done the same, Schlegel said.

So far, his lab has grown prostate, breast, lung and colon cancer cells.

Georgetown University is seeking a patent on the method.

How National Lampoon?s Vacation Would Have Been Different with a Ford Flex

December 7th, 2011

Do you ever turn on TBS and find yourself watching National Lampoon's Vacation for the umpteenth time? Poor Clark Griswold ordered a brand new station wagon for his family's ultimate trip to Wallyworld, but the dealer didn't have it ready. He is forced to haul his family out to California in the shoddy Wagon Queen Family Truckster. Most of the movie revolves around the family getting into adventures due to the terrible quality of their vehicle.

While the Truckster is a classic example of the "woodie" station wagons our parents hauled us to school in; the Ford Flex takes the concept and gives it a modern twist. It is packed with features that would have saved the Griswold clan some time and money had the technology been available in the 1980's.

Getting Lost in East St. Louis
In the movie, Clark breaks down his masculine exterior and stops in a neighborhood in East St. Louis for directions. Clark's innocence gets taken advantage of when his hubcaps get stolen and his car gets tagged. If he were driving a Ford Flex, he could have easily used the built in GPS navigation system to figure out how to cross the Mississippi.

Breaking Down in the Dessert
When Clark and his wife get into a fight, he doesn't notice a sign that says "road closed" and crashes his car. The Ford Flex would have alleviated any bodily harm caused to the Griswold family because of its commitment to safety. It has an AdvanceTrac RSC electronic stability program, six airbags, and the most advanced anti-lock break system to date.

Almost Getting into a Crash because of Christie Brinkley
The Ford Flex could have helped Clark Griswold avoid almost crashing his car into a semi when Christie Brinkley drove beside him by? it probably couldn't have helped that situation. The vehicle could have, however, given him a much wider view given its lack of blind spots. Clark could have probably seen the truck sooner and avoided the near collision.

Clark would have been much better off driving to Wallyworld had he driven a Ford Flex. He would have been even better off if he decided to break down and purchase some plane tickets for his family.
