I mean I seriously fell ! Jeff, I can understand on all counts. When I first decided to delve into bowl turning, I watched the masters going stupid thin so I thought this was the right way to do it. Then I began to discover that there is no "right" or "wrong" way. It is a matter of personal taste, what sells and sometimes just what you can get away with. About 6 years ago I was turning a beautiful piece of spalted Maple into a bowl. I had it done and could have sanded out any imperfections. But I saw one small area where one last cut would make it perfect. I now have a very pretty 5 inch platter instead of a beautiful 7 inch bowl! The bowl gouge hit a catch and blew the top off in less than a heart beat. I kept the top piece hanging in the shop as a reminder until I moved back to Texas.
That said, I still had a tendency to try to go thin because many turners can be a little snobby about such things. Anymore I just don't care. I make what pleases me and that is the important thing. So good on you!

It's hard to believe, but Sifteo's interactive gaming Cubes first went on sale just over a year ago. Fast forward to the present, and the company has unveiled version two of the the MIT-born blocks. 5 Keys In Shaping Your Own Future
Our future is in our hands. It is never dependent on others, nor is it served on a silver platter. All we are given is basic life, and although all the things around us altogether have some influence over what we will become, what we make of ourselves is still a sum of what we decide to become.
Our future is shaped by a few traits and characteristics of our own. The sum of all these key elements makes us unique, and what actually shapes our future.
What are these key elements?
Attitude. Perhaps the most basic determinant of the type of future we will have, a person's attitude largely influences the way he thinks, he acts, he makes decisions. Even if one were born extremely talented, if he/she is constantly pessimistic, then there's a huge chance a person may not reach his full potential. Attitude encompasses one's ability to see the good behind every dark situation. Attitude makes one decide to get up after a fall, and not completely quit on one's dreams and goals. If you are a positive person, you view life as a constant string of opportunities, and not as an unending series of tests and challenges. A negative attitude makes one see the past better than it was, the present worse than it is, and the future less bright that it could be.
Education. There is a reason why our parents struggled to send us all to school. Whether we like it or not, the type and quality of education we acquire will be one of the biggest influences on our future. Doctors did not merely read medical books to be worthy of practice, and neither did lawyers. All people have a right to basic education (at least to learn to read and write), and all other subjects we are taught in school all are applicable in our daily lives (yes, Algebra included). To achieve more, you simply have to learn more. Yes, there is such a thing as "street education" - these are the practical basic survival stuff we learn by associating with society, but street education will never make architects out of dreamers. So no matter how tedious it is to acquire education, always realize that your future highly depends on your level of competency which you learn through basic lessons and teachings.
Experiences. Education is factual knowledge, while experiences are either the application of this knowledge, or that which influences our uniqueness from all other people who acquired the same basic education. Our experiences are our very own taste of real life. If a doctor who grew up in a sheltered home desires to work in a modern, top-of-the-line hospital, then a doctor who was raised in a poor society will most likely want to use his education helping the less fortunate people get well at non-exorbitant prices - maybe even for free (as in the case of doctors who live a life of missionary work). Experiences make us different from everyone else. It is the series of events that transpired in the past that greatly influences our present and our future.
Determination and Perseverance. Some people are dealt better cards than others. Some are given more challenges, or more stumbling blocks. But a person's level of determination and perseverance are the things that will help him see past what is painful and difficult. A lot of people do not amount to much in life. A major reason for this may be quitting before seeing success, or giving up when the going gets tough. Your future is fully determined by the amount of determination you have, and the perseverance to continue despite the difficulties.
Relationships and interaction with others. No man is an island, no man stands alone. We were put on earth together with millions of other unique beings because a huge part of who we are is influenced by our ability to co-exist with others. Life suddenly becomes exciting and meaningful when you have a love partner. You success as a person may largely be due to the relationships you have with your family. Your business success may also be dependent on your ability to interact with people who will have a profound effect in your career. Relationships greatly influence our future, because no person can ever survive alone, and be completely happy.
There are other elements which have an effect on how our future is shaped. But whatever they may be, our own future is always the sum of what we decide to be.

Grilled Broccoli with Pistachio Dressing
Kale. It?s on t-shirts, it?s a statement, it?s a movement. Kale chips are hot, people are blending it into smoothies, juicing it, cutting edge restaurants are serving kale salads.
Did you hear, kale has more iron per calorie than steak?
Don?t get me wrong, I love kale. I?m eating it, too, saving my stems for juice, I?ve got a big patch of it growing in my garden, where I can count on it to regrow abundantly every time I pick some. But kale has been around forever, and it?s always been great. It?s just taking its well-deserved turn in the spotlight.
Not long ago, we were similarly smitten with broccoli. Broccoli sprouts, broccoli slaw, salad, etc. Maybe we moved on because it doesn?t go into smoothies as easily, or become a nacho chip for snacking?
Good ol? broccoli was the big star for years, in part because of its wildly abundant, powerful antioxidants. Vitamin C is the big one, and by the miracle of nature, it?s flanked by chemicals that boost its effectiveness. Carotenoids lutein and zeanthin, the ones that protect vision, and beta carotene are represented. Flavonoids like quercitin and kaempherol also fight oxidative stress. That reduces inflammation, which we now know plays a part in many diseases. There are a whole bunch of glucosinalates in there that detox the system. All this makes for a potent anti-cancer cocktail.
Broccoli is not so different from all its cousins in the brassica family, including kale, cabbages and cauliflower. Sulforaphane, a sulferous compound found in all the brassicas, is touted for protected heart health and lowering cholesterol. It also helps protect your skin from sun damage. A recent study at the Linus Pauling Institute found that sulforaphane works in multiple ways to prevent cancer at the cellular level, restoring the balance needed for our DNA to work well. The Shanghai Breast Cancer Survival Study found that women who ate the most cruciferous vegetables had a 62% higher chance of surviving breast cancer.
Beyond all that, Broccoli is a great source or vitamin K and folate, a good source of vitamin A, molybdenum and manganese, potassium, B6, B2, B3, B5, protein, iron, magnesium and calcium, vitamin E and selenium.
Whew!
So, ready to give broccoli back a place in your vegetable drawer? It?s still sweet and delicious, shaped like little trees, and excellent for dipping in a tasty sauce. The sprouts are superconcentrated with C and many of those magical chemicals, so if you can buy or sprout your own, you will be able to enjoy their crisp, broccoli flavor in salads, sandwiches and stir fries.
Still grilling? Broccoli takes on a nice char, making it a little more kale-chip-like if that is what you need. Slice it in big spears, douse it in olive oil and grill it til the tips are well browned. You can also use the grill wok to cook smaller pieces. At that point, toss it on pizza, in pasta, or eat it with a tasty sauce.
Grilled Broccoli
The preferred cooking method for maximum nutrients in broccoli is steaming, so don?t forget your fave steamer recipes. I like to chop an onion and throw in some waterchestnuts, or whatever veggie I have on had to fill out the mix. A light steam makes it more digestible, and you can leave it crisp-tender for dips and salads, too. The stems are useful, too, just peel them and use in the recipe, as dippers, or to puree for a broccoli soup or dip.
Oh broccoli, we still love you, we really do.
Grilled Broccoli with Pistachio Dressing
This dressing is based on a walnut one I make for Japanese meals. I wanted the green color of the nuts, the sweet and sour lightness of the vinegar and mirin, and for the whole thing to take 2 minutes. So there you go.
Serves 4
1 bunch broccoli
olive or other oil
1/4 cup shelled pistachios
1 tablespoon rice vinegar
1 tablespoon mirin
1 pinch salt
1.? Slice the broccoli in planks, less than half an inch thick with large florets at the top. Light the grill, fire up that gas on high to get the grate nice and hot. When hot, toss the broccoli with oil. Place the broccoli on the hot grate, and turn the flames to low under the broccoli. Press down on the stems with your tongs to get good contact with the grill and make grill marks. Turn as you go.
2. When the broccoli is marked, browned on top and crisp tender in the stems, take off the grill and take into the house. Let cool a bit.
3. In a food processor, grind the pistachios until fine, then add the rive vinegar, mirin and salt. Process until a chunky puree is formed. Spoon over the broccoli. Toss, if desired (I didn?t) and serve.

Why is there a safety gap?
?Many members of the African-American and Latino communities aren?t educated in the basics of child passenger safety,? says Craig Sjogerman, a child passenger safety technician at La Rabida Children?s Hospital in Chicago. ?Some hospitals serving low-income families may provide car seats but are afraid of liability issues, so they do not have hands-on installations of car seats with the parents.?
Sjogerman says low-income families also are less likely to attend birthing classes where car safety education frequently is covered.
?They visit physicians less often, and may not always feel comfortable going to police stations. And single parents are often working at several jobs and may not have the time to attend special safety classes,? he says.
Because of low income and lack of safety education, Sjogerman says, many minority kids ride in second-hand car seats.
?These seats come to families in bad shape ? without manuals and without essential parts that would help keep their kids safe,? he says. ?And they?re often put into older cars that aren?t equipped with tether anchors that help keep forward-facing seats safe.?
Safety suggestions for all children
Child safety seats reduce the risk of death in car crashes by 71 percent for infants and by 54 percent for toddlers ages 1 to 4, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
The most recent guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics suggest that kids under age 13 always should ride in the back seat of a car. Those 2 and under should sit in rear-facing seats. A forward-facing car seat with a five-strap harness should be used as long as possible until the child is the maximum weight and height suggested by the manufacturer. Then, a child should ride in a booster seat until reaching 4? feet tall.
Aside from use of age-appropriate child safety restraints, ?the main problem we have is that too many kids ride in vehicles with no restraints at all,? says Russ Rader, a spokesman for the nonprofit Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. ?No matter? how old you are, seat belts can save lives.?
To ensure all child passengers ride safely in a car, Sjogerman offers these tips:
Focus on the harnesses. Straps for child seats should not be twisted or be threaded other than how the manufacturer recommends. The chest clips of the harness should be at the manufacturer?s recommended spot on the child, typically right between the armpits.
Zero in on the installation. All child safety seats and booster seats should be held down snuggly in the seat of the car. You shouldn?t be able to move the child seat sideways or up and down more than 1 inch.
Find the perfect fit. Don?t rush into putting your child in a larger seat, and don?t keep your kids in a seat that has exceeded the recommended height or weight limit.
Keep up to date. Unless the manufacturer indicates otherwise, Sjogerman says, a seat shouldn?t be used if it?s more than 6 years old. ?Over time, exposure to ultra-violet rays and temperature changes degrades the plastic and other materials of the seats, making them unable to properly protect a child in a crash,? he says.

Most farmers in developing countries rely on buckets and watering cans
JOHANNESBURG, 24 August 2012 (IRIN) - Quietly, a revolution to develop cheap ways to draw water for irrigation is unfolding in small villages and rural regions in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, a new three-year?study has found. This movement has the ability to turn agriculture around in the developing world.The study?by the Sri Lanka-based International Water Management Institute (IWMI), a nonprofit research centre?found that small farmers, tired of waiting for governments to deliver aid, have found ways to access motor pumps, build reservoirs or ponds to harvest rain water to improve their crop . And it is paying off.
'We were amazed at the scale of what is going on,? said IWMI?s Meredith Giordano, who coordinated the initiative. ?Despite constraints, such as high upfront costs and poorly developed supply chains, small-scale farmers across Africa and Asia have moved ahead using their own resources to finance and install irrigation technologies. It?s clear that farmers themselves are driving this trend.?
Surveys carried out in Ghana, Ethiopia and Zambia found that more than 80 percent of all owners of small-scale irrigation equipment had used their own or their family?s savings to buy it. Banks or microcredit organisations rarely lent money to buy the equipment, and help from NGOs or donors was uncommon.
Buckets and watering cans used by most farmers in sub-Saharan Africa are handy for watering small plots and are rather cheap, with negligible operating costs. A treadle pump can cost up to US $100, with families helping out, and the cost of operating it is also zero. Prices for motorized pumps can reach up to $250, but Giordano told IRIN that many farmers had found a way to manage this cost. For instance, in parts of India, a farmer will buy a pump and then rent it out to other farmers when not using it. There are also pump-on-a-bike hire schemes, where cycling entrepreneurs tour rural areas, renting out pumps strapped to their bicycles.
'The proliferation of small-scale private irrigation is an established trend in South Asia that is now gaining ground in sub-Saharan Africa,' said the study.' In many African countries, private irrigation by farmers is already much more significant than the public irrigation sector,' said Giordano. For example, in Ghana, private irrigation by smallholder farmers employs 45 times more individuals and covers 25 times more land than public irrigation schemes.Paying off
The results are becoming apparent. In the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, farmers who have constructed ponds to irrigate crops have seen their incomes rise by 70 percent. A similar initiative in Gursum, an area in Ethiopia's Oromia region, has been so 'successful that it is now known as the ?No-pond-No-wife? sub-district,? said the study. Rainwater harvesting was introduced by the Oromia government in 2002, with ponds being built with plastic sheets. Farmers, however scaled-up the initiative by improving the water-holding capacity of the ponds by joining two plastic sheets, ultimately improving crop yields?so much so that 'farmers without ponds are said to have difficulty finding a wife, hence the area?s nickname.'
The study also found that in Tanzania, half of the dry-season incomes of smallholders come from growing irrigated vegetables. In Zambia, the 20 percent of smallholders who cultivate vegetables in the dry season earn 35 percent more than those who do not.
Enormous impact
The researchers also examined how each of these technologies?use of motorized pumps, small reservoirs, community-managed river diversions?could reduce poverty. They found the growth and impact of these technologies would be enormous. Motorized pumps, for instance, could be provided to at least 185 million people in sub-Saharan Africa, generating a revenue of $22 billion annually. The study took variables such as access to markets, investment costs and availability of natural water sources to calculate benefits.The findings are not surprising considering only three percent of sub-Saharan Africa's water is drawn for irrigation, according to the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization, and only four percent of its arable land is irrigated. The IWMI study found that more than 80 percent of the farmers use water cans and buckets to draw water for their food crops. Small farmers across the ocean in South Asia have similarly relied on low-tech forms of irrigation, such as depending on monsoon rains to water their crops.
Yet the study warns that there are also risks to unchecked expansion of smallholder water management. 'The poorest farmers, especially women, still struggle to find the resources needed to access new technologies, which may lead to greater inequities. And if farmers engage in a water free-for-all, supplies in some areas could dwindle past sustainable levels.'
The study recommends that governments and local authorities engage with what is happening on the ground and support it with policies that increase access to loans and improve agricultural extension services i.e., teaching improved farming methods.

New Premier League campaign to kick off
Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has warned champions Manchester City that his side's swoop for Arsenal striker Robin van Persie could tilt the balance of power in the Premier League back to Old Trafford.
With the new Premier League campaign starting on Saturday, United have landed a significant blow before the first ball has even been kicked after Dutch star van Persie decided to snub City in favour of a move to Sir Alex Ferguson's team.
When big-spending City snatched the title in sensational fashion on the final day of last season, scoring twice in stoppage-time to win against QPR, it seemed there had been a changing of the guard in England's top flight.
City, who start their title defence against Southampton at Eastlands on Sunday, had looked favourites to cement their status as the country's new superpower by signing van Persie.
But Ferguson's powers of persuasion tempted van Persie to United and Ferdinand believes it could prove a defining moment for both clubs.
"The manager has always said to me that the transfer window isn't always about who you bring in but it's as much about shaking up the changing room. And I think that's definitely something that's going to happen this time," Ferdinand said.
"Expectations here are higher than anywhere else in the world, some do brilliantly and some don't fare quite so well. I've got no worries about Robin, though.
"I know his main aim won't be a selfish one, it will be all about winning trophies. And if he can score goals like he did last year then we'll all be smiling come the end of the season."
Van Persie and fellow new signing Shinji Kagawa could both feature in United's starting line-up at Everton as Ferguson's team look to make a strong start after finishing without silverware for the first time since 2005.
Even without van Persie, City are likely to pose the biggest threat to United's hopes of winning a 20th league title.
City boss Roberto Mancini has been frustrated by his club's failure to deliver top-class signings to build on last season's first title for 44 years, but in Carlos Tevez he has a revitalised player capable of causing serious damage to Premier League defences.
Tevez spent most of last season in self-imposed exile after a touchline row with Mancini following his refusal to come on as a substitute in a Champions League tie.
He returned to play a cameo role as City won the title and with the benefit of a full pre-season under his belt, the Argentine forward looks back to his very best, scoring a superb goal to cap a fine display in last weekend's Community Shield win over Chelsea.
"I'm returning feeling renewed," Tevez said. "I'm really up for having a great season. I'm better now and only thinking about playing football.
"I feel useful and valued and that is fundamental for me. It's been a long time since I've scored a goal like that (against Chelsea), like the ones I used to score when I was at Boca, and this speaks of the confidence I have."
Chelsea appear the only other serious contenders for the title, but even the European champions have questions to answer following the exit of Didier Drogba.
Drogba was a talismanic figure as Chelsea salvaged a turbulent season by winning the Champions League and FA Cup, but the Ivory Coast striker has departed to China, leaving Fernando Torres as boss Roberto Di Matteo's leading forward.
Torres will be supported by new playmakers Eden Hazard and Oscar, who arrived for a combined ?60 million.
But Di Matteo, whose side open at Wigan on Sunday, won't have been pleased to hear Torres reveal his torment at playing a bit-part role last season.
"At times I was thinking 'I will sit here on the bench, I won't make any noise. I don't even want to play'," Torres said.
On Saturday, there will be plenty of focus on Arsenal's new strikers Olivier Giroud and Lukas Podolski as the post-van Persie era starts against Sunderland, while Brendan Rodgers takes charge of his first Premier League match as Liverpool manager at West Bromwich Albion.

US drone kills 5 militants in northern Pakistan

ISLAMABAD (AP) ? A missile launched from a U.S. drone struck a suspected militant hideout in a tribal region in northern Pakistan where allies of a powerful warlord were gathered Saturday, killing five of his supporters, Pakistani officials said.
The strike in North Waziristan against allies of Hafiz Gul Bahadur, a militant commander whose forces frequently target U.S. and other NATO troops in neighboring Afghanistan, comes amid speculation over whether Pakistan will launch an operation against militants in the tribal region.
The U.S. has pushed Pakistan repeatedly to take such a step and earlier this week U.S. Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta told The Associated Press that Pakistan was preparing an operation targeting the Pakistani Taliban in North Waziristan.
Pakistan has been reluctant to undertake an offensive there, saying its military is already overtaxed by fighting in other tribal areas and parts of Pakistan. But many in the U.S. believe Pakistan does not want to upset the many militant groups there such as the Haqqani network that could be useful allies in Afghanistan after foreign forces leave.
On Thursday, the top U.S. commander in the region, Gen. James Mattis, met with Pakistani army chief Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani.
During the meeting the Pakistani general repeated his government's stance that it would undertake an operation in North Waziristan only if it coincides with Pakistan's interests and not in response to outside pressure, according to a military press release.
Pakistan's foreign ministry condemned the latest drone attack.
"Pakistan has consistently maintained that these attacks are a violation of its sovereignty and territorial integrity, and are in contravention of international law," the ministry said in a statement.
Drone attacks are very unpopular in Pakistan, where they are seen as a violation of the country's sovereignty and responsible for the deaths of innocent civilians. The U.S. maintains the targeted strikes are directed against militants and necessary to combat groups like al-Qaida.
Some Uzbek foreign fighters were among the dead in Saturday's strike, according to two Pakistan intelligence officials. Three people were also wounded, they said. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to media.
Meanwhile, five security officials died during a suicide bombing on a checkpoint in southern Pakistan.
Spokesman Murtaza Baig said the attacker detonated his explosives early on Saturday after he was stopped at the checkpoint in a Quetta suburb. The killed troops were members of Pakistan's paramilitary Frontier Corps.
Baluchistan province and its capital, Quetta, have been the scene of an insurgency by Baluch nationalists who are demanding greater rights and share from the income generated from gas and minerals extracted from the province. Various Baluch groups are blamed for attacks on the province's security forces and are suspected of targeting other ethnic groups in the region.
Islamist Taliban militants and the extremist group Lashker-e-Jhangvi are also active in the province.
