?Speed of cancer treatment is dictated by where a person lives? ? Kirsty Williams

The Welsh Labour government has presided over a failing cancer service that dictates the speed of treatment by where a person lives, according to the leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats Kirsty Williams.

The Welsh government's target is for 95% of urgent suspected cancer patients to be seen by a cancer specialist by 62 days. Statistics have shown that the target was missed by nearly 10%, with just 86% of patients being seen within the target time. Only one Local Health Board, Aneurin Bevan, met the 95% target.

Kirsty Williams AM commented:

"Today's statistics highlight that there is a huge variation in waiting times with regards to where a person lives. It is not right that Abertawe Bro Morgannwg LHB has only 75% of patients starting treatment with 62 days, compared to 97% of patients being seen by Aneurin Bevan. The Welsh Labour Government has presided of a failing cancer service that dictates the speed of treatment by where a person lives.

"The figures released also show that the type of cancer a person has will likely determine the speed within which they will be seen by a specialist. For example, only 52% of patients thought to be suffering from head or neck cancer were seen within 62 days. That, quite frankly, is disgraceful.

"62 days is already a incredibly long time for a person to have to wait to be seen by a cancer specialist, but being forced to wait even longer than that is completely unacceptable. It is imperative that all urgent suspected cancer patients receive treatment promptly, otherwise there is a chance that their health can seriously deteriorate in the meantime.

"It can come to no surprise to any of us that people are having to wait much longer than the target time to be seen by a cancer specialist. The Welsh Labour Government has had years of opportunity to make significant improvements to Wales' cancer services, but it has categorically failed in doing so."

Goodbye Clinton? President Obama prepares for cabinet shuffle

As President Obama prepares for his second term, preparations have begun for the traditional shuffling of the Cabinet.

Top priority for the president: filling slots for those top officials heading - if not running - for the door: Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Secretary of the Treasury Tim Geithner.

To replace Clinton, Democratic insiders suggest that U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Dr. Susan Rice is the frontrunner, with Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., also a viable candidate.

Rice has been harshly criticized by Republicans for the erroneous comments she made on Sunday news talk shows after the attack on the U.S. compound in Benghazi, Libya, comments that were based on intelligence reports that falsely blamed the attack on a protest against an anti-Muslim video. When the president, during his recent press conference, offered a vociferous defense of Rice, many of those close to him began to suspect he was tipping his hand as to what he might decide.

To replace Geithner at Treasury, White House chief of staff Jack Lew is thought to have the inside track if he wants it, with other possibilities including Neal Wolin, the current deputy secretary of the Treasury and Lael Brainaed, current under secretary of the Treasury for international affairs.

Other informed sources suggest that there is consideration being given to a business/CEO type such as investor Roger Altman, former Time/Warner chair Richard Parsons, and Facebook's Sheryl Sandberg.

Those are the two most pressing jobs to fill, with Clinton exhausted from a long stretch in government - eight years as first lady, eight as senator, and four as secretary of state - and the president having personally promised Geithner's wife that he could leave as soon as possible after the election.

Any of the business/CEO types being discussed for treasury secretary could also serve as secretary of commerce, a position that for the Obama administration has proved as troublesome as the role of drummer in Spinal Tap. Jeff Zients, the acting director of the Office of Management & Budget, is said to be under consideration.

It's too flip to refer to it as a consolation prize, but informed sources say that - with Defense Secretary Leon Panetta also planning on leaving - Kerry could be offered the position secretary of defense if he wants it, though the Massachusetts senator has suggested he only wants State. Another option, Michelle Flournoy, a former under secretary of defense for Policy, would be the first female to serve in that position. There was some discussion of National Security Adviser Tom Donilon moving across the river, but it seems clear, sources say, that he's staying where he is.

If Lew leaves to take the position at Treasury, some possible replacements for him as chief of staff include deputy National Security Adviser Denis McDonough or Vice President Biden's current chief of staff Ron Klain. Tom Nides, deputy secretary of state for management and resources, has also been discussed.

President Obama's senior adviser David Plouffe has also long discussed leaving the White House. There are many options to fill his shoes, including the elevation of communications director Dan Pfeiffer. Also possible: bringing back former press secretary Robert Gibbs, or former deputy chief of staff/campaign manager Jim Messina. Another option might be to bring in some of the people who were part of the messaging shop in the campaign - David Simus, who served as director of opinion research for the campaign, or Larry Grisolano, who did ads for campaign.

Police, FA look into anti-Semitic chants at match

By ROB HARRIS

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 2:48 p.m. ET Nov. 26, 2012

LONDON (AP) -English football faced another racism investigation by authorities on Monday after a Premier League match between Tottenham and West Ham was marred by anti-Semitic abuse from supporters.

West Ham pledged to impose life bans after some of its fans on Sunday were heard making chants about Adolf Hitler and also praising Italian club Lazio after an apparent anti-Semitic stabbing of a Tottenham fan on Wednesday in Rome ahead of a Europa League match against the Italian club.

West Ham fans were also heard hissing, a gesture widely seen as imitating the sound of the gas chambers used during the Holocaust. Tottenham is known to have a large Jewish fan base, which has long been subjected to anti-Semitic abuse at matches.

"I was very disappointed to hear some of the songs yesterday and it was embarrassing," Israel midfielder Yossi Benayoun, who is on loan at West Ham from Chelsea, wrote on Twitter.

The Metropolitan Police is looking into the chants heard during Sunday's globally-broadcast match at White Hart Lane after receiving a complaint from a member of the crowd.

Police had already arrested two fans at White Hart Lane for making Nazi-style salutes, described as a "racially aggravated public order offense." The fans accepted police cautions, which are given to people who admit to minor offenses, but don't count as criminal convictions.

West Ham has identified one of the fans as an Upton Park season ticket holder and sent him a letter banning him from their ground, while the club said "other individuals identified can expect a similar swift and robust response."

The English Football Association is gathering video evidence from Tottenham and said it encourages clubs "to identify and ban for life any individuals involved in incidents of abusive chanting."

"There is no place for anti-Semitism or any form of discrimination in football," the FA said after launching a formal investigation.

West Ham, whose chairman David Gold is Jewish, said it is assisting Tottenham with the investigation "into the conduct of a small number of supporters and alleged inappropriate chanting."

"West Ham United will take the strongest possible action against any of their supporters, including enforcing life bans from the club, that are found guilty of behavior which is categorically not condoned by West Ham United," the east London club said in a statement.

West Ham, which lost the game 3-1, stressed that no fans were arrested for "racism or violence" during 46 games while playing in the second tier last season before returning to the Premier League.

The main body representing British Jews nationally said chants glorifying Hitler were "a stain upon the character" of football.

"Clearly there is either a lack of understanding or a lack of compassion within some sections of the British football world about these issues - a lack of understanding or compassion which needs to be addressed," the Board of Deputies of British Jews said in a statement.

The Community Security Trust, which monitors anti-Semitism in Britain and offers security services, said it has received complaints from Jewish fans at the Tottenham match and is seeking an urgent meeting with the FA.

CST spokesman Mark Gardner said the abuse "risks seriously compromising" efforts to eradicate racism from football.

"Fans who indulge in racist or anti-Semitic behavior should be arrested, charged and banned," he said. "We cannot have `the football family' ignoring, and therefore encouraging, mass Nazi chanting."

Also Monday, another Premier League club, Norwich, complained to police after allegedly racist tweets were directed at defender Sebastien Bassong after Saturday's 1-1 draw at Everton.

English football is already taking moves to clamp down on racism after two-high profile cases.

Chelsea captain John Terry was banned for four matches and Liverpool striker Luis Suarez served an eight-match suspension after being found guilty of racially abusing opponents in games. Both players were kept on by their clubs.

Auburn fires Gene Chizik after 3-9 season

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) ? Auburn coach Gene Chizik was fired Sunday after the Tigers' rapid fall from a national champion to a winless Southeastern Conference season.

The Tigers endured the worst slide within two years of winning a national championship of any team since the Associated Press poll started in 1936 and hadn't lost this many games since going 0-10 in 1950. The decision came 17 months after Auburn gave Chizik a contract worth some $3.5 million annually through 2015 with a hefty buyout.

"After careful consideration and a thorough evaluation of our football program, I have recommended that Coach Chizik not be retained," Auburn Athletic Director Jay Jacobs said in a statement. "President (Jay) Gogue has accepted my recommendation. Earlier this morning, I informed Gene that he will not return as head coach."

The players were informed in a team meeting Sunday. Jacobs scheduled a news conference for later in the afternoon.

"I'm extremely disappointed with the way this season turned out and I apologize to the Auburn family and our team for what they have had to endure," Chizik said. "In my 27 years of coaching, I have gained an understanding of the high expectations in this profession. When expectations are not met, I understand changes must be made.

The Tigers went from 14-0 with a perfect SEC record with Cam Newton leading the offense in 2010 to 3-9 and 0-8, losing their final three league games by a combined 150-21. Auburn was blown out by Texas A&M (63-21) and Georgia (38-0) but the finale was even more painful for Tigers fans.

No. 2 Alabama cruised to a six-touchdown halftime lead en route to a 49-0 demolition Saturday that could easily have been much worse. It was still the second-most lopsided Iron Bowl in history, behind only the Tide's 55-0 win in 1948.

"While we experienced a tremendous low in 2012, I will always be proud of the incredible highs that we achieved, including three bowl victories, an SEC championship and a national championship," Chizik said.

He was 33-19 in four seasons and 15-17 in SEC games.

Auburn said the total buyout for Chizik and his assistant coaches is $11.09 million. Chizik's buyout will total $7.5 million and be paid in monthly installments for the next four years.

The deal calls for Chizik to make "reasonable" efforts to land a new job, with that salary deducted from the buyout.

Auburn tight end Philip Lutzenkirchen said players gave Chizik a standing ovation after the team meeting and that the coach was tough on himself. Lutzenkirchen also understands the reality of life in the SEC.

"Not winning a conference game isn't going to cut it wherever you are in this league," he said.

Defensive tackle Jeff Whitaker said, "It's kind of crazy right now. I had a special bond with Coach Chizik."

Chizik had sandwiched two 8-5 seasons around the national title, but never approached the success of 2010, when Newton won the Heisman Trophy. The Tigers were 7-17 in SEC games outside of 2010 during his tenure.

His hiring was criticized by some fans after Chizik went 5-19 in two seasons at Iowa State and lost the last 10 games of his first head coaching job.

Jacobs was heckled at the airport after making the hire.

Chizik had been defensive coordinator on unbeaten teams at Auburn and Texas.

A search committee comprised of former Heisman Trophy winners Pat Sullivan and Bo Jackson and former Tigers fullback Mac Crawford will assist Jacobs, the school said.

A transition year might have been expected.

Chizik had to replace the offensive and defensive coordinators after last season. Chizik made an ill-fated switch from Gus Malzahn's no-huddle, spread offense to a pro-style system with the hiring of former Temple offensive coordinator Scot Loeffler.

The Tigers struggled in the transition, partly because of shaky quarterback play. Auburn finally turned to freshman Jonathan Wallace ? the season's third starter ? for the final four games.

Auburn ranked at or near the bottom of the SEC in every major statistical category offensively and defensively.

Chizik's tenure was marred by off-the-field problems, too, to the extent that Chizik had employees of a private firm run curfew checks on players this season.

Four members of the 2010 national championship team were arrested on robbery charges in March 2011. Antonio Goodwin was convicted in April and sentenced to 15 years in prison. Dakota Mosley, Michael McNeil and Shaun Kitchens are awaiting trial.

Two-time 1,000-yard rusher Mike Dyer transferred to Arkansas State with Malzahn after being indefinitely suspended before the bowl game.

Freshman quarterback Zeke Pike was arrested in June for public intoxication and later dismissed from the team. Starting center Reese Dismukes was suspended for the opener against Clemson following a public intoxication arrest.

Auburn is also the subject of an NCAA investigation that includes the recruitment of Memphis running back Jovon Robinson.

Memphis City Schools said in August that the NCAA had contacted the school district regarding allegations involving a former Wooddale High School athlete, identified by the Memphis Commercial Appeal as Robinson. A school guidance counselor resigned after admitting to creating the fake transcript.

The Birmingham News reported on Wednesday that NCAA investigators had interviewed at least one assistant coach and several players during the week leading up to the Iron Bowl.

Chizik's contract includes a clause that it wouldn't owe the buyout money if he is fired for cause, including findings of major rules violations or significant or repetitive violations" involving him or his program.

Chizik and Auburn have weathered past NCAA scrutiny. The governing body closed investigations into the recruitment of Newton and allegations from four former players that they were paid thousands of dollars during their college careers.

Potential Post-Birth Issues with Pelvic Organ Prolapse

Ask any woman about her labor, and she will give you a detailed account of the experience. However, after the labor has ended and the baby is happily out of the womb, a woman?s pelvic tissues and muscles have a tremendous amount of healing to do.

Connective tissues, which have stretched to multiple times their original size, gradually begin to shrink. Organs that were pushed and compressed due to uterus expansion will migrate back to their original positions. However, in many cases, these tissues will never be quite the same.

The process of pregnancy and childbirth can leave them slightly weakened and/or shifted out of alignment. Eventually, age, menopause and other factors ? such as smoking and obesity ? can cause pelvic tissues to become so weak that women develop a condition called Pelvic Organ Prolapse (POP).

In severe cases of POP, women may require surgical intervention to treat their symptoms. Certain surgical procedures, such as those using vaginal mesh, have been associated with high numbers of health complications. Thousands of women have had negative effects and have since filed vaginal mesh lawsuits against makers of mesh products. By focusing on pelvic health throughout pregnancy and the postpartum period, women can help to avoid future surgical intervention.

Pelvic Organ Prolapse

As many as 50 percent of women between the ages of 50 and 79 will be diagnosed with some level of POP. By the time POP is diagnosed, weakened connective tissues and muscles in the pelvis have allowed organs to pull away from their pelvic support and descend toward the pelvic floor.

In many of these cases, the condition is so mild that there are no tangible symptoms. In other cases, the organs can drop onto the vagina and even prolapse into the vaginal canal. Incontinence is a common symptom of POP as well, which is why paying attention to pelvic health is so important for post-birth and beyond.

Preventative Treatment for Pelvic Organ Prolapse

Women can help to prevent the development of POP symptoms by focusing on their pelvic health. It is never too late to focus on exercises and physical therapy measures targeting the pelvic floor.

  • Healthy Lifestyle Choices. As smoking and obesity are common factors in POP, a healthy diet and regular exercise can help to mitigate its symptoms.
  • Kegel Exercises. Pregnant women should begin doing daily Kegels to keep vaginal and pelvic floor muscles toned and strong. Studies have shown that women who do Kegels throughout their pregnancy have fewer incidences of incontinence. After the baby is born, Kegels can help pelvic tissues to heal, and prevent the onset of POP.
  • Physical Therapy. Women who experience traumatic vaginal childbirth, or who have a family history of more moderate to severe POP, may want to consult a pelvic physical therapist to learn other postural advice and exercises to promote the return of vaginal and pelvic muscle strength.
  • Postnatal Massage. Massages specialized for the pelvis can help the organs to be realigned, increase circulation and work with other physical therapies to promote pelvic health. Some of the most effective massage styles include Shiatsu, Myofascial Release and Maya Massage.

Women who prioritize their pelvic health will be able to minimize their post-birth issues with Pelvic Organ Prolapse.

Joe Biden Campaigns In Final Swing

By MATTHEW DALY, THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

SARASOTA, Fla. -- Two weeks after the election, Vice President Joe Biden will turn 70, with 40 years in elective office. But win or lose, this may not be Biden's last campaign.

Just this week he jokingly told a voter in Florida that he should vote for Biden in four years after the man's health insurance rates drop because of Obamacare.

Biden's presidential aspirations are anything but a joke.

He ran for president in 1988 and again in 2008. If he ran for the White House in 2016, Biden would be 73, one of the oldest candidates for president in history, older by a few months than Ronald Reagan when he ran for re-election in 1984.

Biden aides say he will not make a decision until well after the election, when he sits down with family members and advisers for a heartfelt strategy session. It's the same process Biden used when he decided to run for president in 2008 ? and when he passed up a bid four years earlier.

For now, Biden and his aides say he is focused exclusively on helping re-elect President Barack Obama. Biden maintains an active campaign schedule that has taken him to more than 120 campaign events this year, including eight states in the past two weeks.

Biden is so consumed by the election that he has little time ? or inclination ? to think about what comes next, said Ted Kaufman, a close Biden friend and former chief of staff who succeeded Biden in the Senate and has been involved in all of Biden's campaigns since 1972.

"In real life, you totally concentrate on one election at a time," Kaufman said.

Still, retirement is unlikely, Kaufman and other friends say. Biden is energized by the political game and shows no inclination to slow down. Biden frequently says a person is on the way up or the way down ? and he does not want to head down.

While many former political luminaries such as Sens. Bob Dole, George Mitchell and others earned huge paydays at high-powered law firms, Biden is unlikely to follow suit.

As a former vice president, Biden could make big money on the speaking circuit or by writing a book ? options he may pursue ? but friends says he is not motivated by money. Biden and his wife, Jill, an English professor at Northern Virginia Community College, are financially secure, and Biden's three children are grown. Joe and Jill Biden reported adjusted gross income of $379,035 last year.

So what does a 70-year-old ex-vice president do?

Biden "could do anything," says former Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland, a close friend.

Biden could join a think tank or start his own initiative, focusing on foreign policy or family justice or labor, Strickland said.

"He's a person with considerable energy and a strong motivation to serve," Strickland said, noting Biden's Roman Catholic faith.

Strickland scoffs at the notion that Biden would cash in on his four-decade tenure in Washington, which includes four years as vice president and six terms in the U.S. Senate, where he chaired both the Judiciary and Foreign Relations committees.

"Anybody who knows Joe Biden knows he's motivated by a sense of responsibility that is almost religious in nature," said Strickland, who has traveled all over Ohio with Biden this year.

Biden, who commuted by train from Wilmington, Del., as a senator, likely would return to his home there, but probably would maintain a residence in Washington, where three of his five grandchildren live. The other two live in Delaware.

If he runs in four years, Biden has some obvious strengths.

He grew up in Scranton, Pa., and is seen as a champion of white, working- and middle-class voters. He also has strong support from unions and ethnic minorities as well as people in the gay community, who were encouraged by his early support of gay marriage.

Biden has been a regular presence in Ohio, a critical state on the electoral map, and has traveled often to Florida, Iowa and New Hampshire ? key, early voting states for a possible 2016 run.

Biden has been "very successful at raising the enthusiasm level with our base," former Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell said.

Even with those strengths, Biden's tendency to go off script ? in Virginia he called Senate candidate Tim Kaine "Tom Kaine" ? causes nervousness among the Obama campaign hierarchy. Transcripts of his remarks are not distributed to the press corps, in contrast to those of the president and first lady Michelle Obama.

Biden knows his fate is tied to Obama.

At an appearance at a campaign office in Iowa this week, he thanked volunteers and reminded them that Iowa was the state that put Obama "on the road" to the presidency in 2008.

"I may have been a little disappointed at the time," Biden said, "but we got the right order."

A supporter shouted, "You're our man in 2016!"

Biden glanced at the woman, but remained uncharacteristically silent.

Ain't It Cool News: The best in movie, TV, DVD, and comic book news.

@@@ What the $% is AICN COMICS Q&@? @@@

Q?s by Prof. Challenger!
Professor Challenger here with a thought-provoking Q&A between myself and artist, Christopher Shy (of StudioRonin fame) about his new graphic novel THE NORTH END OF THE WORLD.

THE NORTH END OF THE WORLD is a collaboration of ShadowCatcher Entertainment and Black Watch Comics written by screenwriter Dave Hunaker and illustrated by Shy. They debuted the book at the 2012 New York City Comic-Con where it was a complete sell-out of available copies that weekend.

It is described by the publishers as ?a bold, alternative journey into the mind and life of legendary later 19th and early 20th century photographer/filmmaker Edward Curtis and his lifelong fascination ? some would say obsession ? with the Indians of North America and, especially, the hidden aspects of their spirituality.? Thus, it is both biography of a controversial historical figure but also a fictional exploration of those aspects of his journey that are not known in great detail.

The key players are Curtis, his adolescent daughter Beth, his best friend George Hunt, and most importantly the Kwakiutl Indians. The graphic novel follows them deep into the foreboding woods of Vancouver Island where they become immersed in the culture of the Kwakiutl and attempt to capture on film the dark ceremonies and cannibalistic rituals that are continuing to be practiced in defiance of the law.

Chris Shy is a painter of comics/graphic novels. He founded Studio Ronin and has completed a number of works for the both the comics field and for Hollywood. He has painted graphic novels such as SILENT LEAVES and SOUL STEALER on the independent side and produced striking covers for Marvel Comics and others. For Hollywood he has created production designs and artwork for films such as FRIDAY THE 13TH, CONAN, and PATHFINDER. When not producing graphic novels or engaged in a film production, he also finds time to maintain a following as a fine artist as well with gallery shows.

Now, on to the questions.

PROFESSOR CHALLENGER(PROF): Chris, thanks for taking the time to talk to me and the AICN readers about THE NORTH END OF THE WORLD. Talk to me a little about the genesis of this project. Did writer, Dave Hunsaker, come to you with the idea ready to go or was this something you two developed mutually?

CHRIS SHY(CS): I met Dave Hunsaker through a mutual friend, Sean Davis. Dave needed concept art for a screenplay he had written to visualize a pitch on that project. The Curtis project came up later, as a general discussion. I think our shared passion for Curtis bore out the concept of me adapting the screenplay. I met the producer on the project, David Skinner, of ShadowCatcher Entertainment, whom Dave had written the screenplay for. As in anything, once you really like the people, you find a way to work together.

PROF: Can you tell me a little about the relationship between your Blackwatch Comics and the film company, Shadowcatcher Entertainment? Did this project begin as a failed film project or, rather, is the graphic novel a likely basis for a future film production?

CS: Well, it all starts with Studio Ronin. BlackWatch Comics was an outgrowth of Studio Ronin becoming too big for one studio to handle. I founded Studio Ronin in 1996, to publish art books, and do design. Ronin now handles mostly the film and concept side of things. They build special effects models, concept design, the bread and butter of pre-prep on any project I do.

Michael Easton and I founded BlackWatch Comics seven years ago as a way to concentrate very carefully on the publishing side of the graphic novels, during Soul Stealer. Michael and I had a very specific idea on how we wanted to do those books, and we knew the only way was to simply do these ourselves. We hired a team, recruited some of the best folks out there, and started publishing our own books. When we decided to go forward with THE NORTH END OF THE WORLD, for ShadowCatcher, a big discussion was would we shop the book for distribution.

In the end, we decided full creative control was what we all wanted, and to do that, BlackWatch Comics would publish and ShadowCatcher Entertainment would be our partner in that endeavor. The screenplay was never a failed film project. I think a story of this scope was something of a passion project for David Skinner and Dave Hunsaker, and knowing that this was a bit off the beaten path, adapting this as a graphic, evolving it to another stage first, was going to allow it to take on a fuller life, and breath, rather than just sending it out into the wild.

As far as I know, THE NORTH END OF THE WORLD was kept pretty close to the vest, before I was approached to adapt it. I think we would all love to see it evolve as a feature, but at this stage, we are all very proud of this book, and what we were able to achieve with it.

PROF: I'm curious about your familiarity going into it regarding Edward Curtis and the history of the Native American cultures he was instrumental in recording for history. Was he or his work something that already fascinated you or did you have to dig into something new for you?

CS: I would say I have been fairly obsessed with Curtis since I was a kid. I had a few books with his photos, given to me by my Grandfather. Growing up in Kentucky, exploring the forests there, camping, I felt a kinship with Curtis and the time he spent in the unknown. I carried my cameras and water colors into the forest, up the side of cliffs, and imagined carrying this giant camera with boxes of glass plates, trying to record a way of life that was rapidly disappearing. My great Grandmother was Native American, and we as a family knew very little of her, or her heritage, so I understood and felt Curtis frustrations, or not knowing, of seeing a generation watch as things changed, and disappeared, and no one bothered to try and document any of it.. I think in the end, the body of work he left behind is a treasure. It both illuminates and haunts us, it informs and yet each photo leaves behind so many questions about the people he photographed.

PROF: What type of research did you need to do for the visual side of this project? Are you going more with your imagination or are you trying to ground your fantastic imagery with a grounding in reality?

CS: If we look at this story at the beginning, Dave Hunsaker and David Skinner had been hip deep in this for quite a while. Their attention to detail was amazing. I would describe my involvement as the last member of an expedition to show up on the dock before the boat left. I had a general knowledge of Curtis, but knew very little of the Kwakiutl, or their existence in British Columbia. To that end, one of first things we did, as a group, was travel, and see the actual locations that Curtis did his work on. We shot location photos in Seattle, at pioneer square, visited the Flurry Gallery, to examine original volumes of Curtis? photographs, and all of the wonderful large size reproductions and prints of his work, in detail. David Skinner owns a set of Curtis?s 20-volume book set ?The North American Indian,? so I was able to look and study some of the volumes in great detail. A true experience.

We traveled to Vancouver Island, and I shot reference, and took extensive notes. We visited the remains of Fort Rupert, the site of a former Hudson's Bay Company fort which was built in 1849, near present-day Port Hard. Vancouver Island was where Curtis spent most of his time, and shot most of his film In ?The Land Of The HeadHunters.? So, to stand on those spots, visit the remains, it was very profound. To hold a camera in my hand and take those photos, in the same spots Curtis had taken his, I understood a small amount of what he must have went through, and endured. Some of these places are not easy to get to, standing on banks, and beaches, looking at ancient Pictographs curved in to the stones, this was truly the end of the known world for some of them, and I began to understand why Curtis traveled there. It truly is a beautiful place.

From there we traveled further north, to Cormorant Island, to the village of Alert Bay, and visited several Kwakwaka'wakw sacred spots, including a First Nation burial ground. The Kwakwaka'wakw play such an important role in the Curtis story. His best friend George Hunt was Kwakwaka'wakw, and Hunts struggled within the Kwakwaka'wakw community. The role of the British government, taking Kwakwaka'wakw artifacts the at the time, and the Kwakwaka'wakw?s struggle to get those artifacts back, and retain their identity. In all of this we have Curtis? obsession with The-Cannibal-At-The-End-Of-The-World myth. I wanted to get as many photos relating to those events as I could. I want stress we never used anything exactly as we saw it, out of respect for the Kwakwaka'wakw. They lost so much, and fought very hard to get their heritage back, I didn?t want to present anything as it was found, to take advantage of that history, or try and present it as exact, which would have been impossible. So I went about immersing myself in their artist style, to try and understand how they would have drawn certain sections of this. The artifacts housed in the cultural center helped immensely fill in any gaps.

Illustrating this was one of hardest things I have ever undertaken; I was completely exhausted at the end of this book.

PROF: That?s intense. So, given all that research for authenticity and understanding, to what extent is the story itself based on real events or is it essentially wholly sprung from the imagination but featuring characters from real-life?

CS: It is certainly based in some small part on his life, and where he went, and the relationships we know he had. As to conversations he may have had, we can only speculate. There is precious little we know about the time he shot his film at Fort Rupert. We have the film, we have some documentation, and we know the outcome of his life, his career in ruins. The fiction comes in when we try and speculate on what may have happened in those gaps at Fort Rupert, and certainly I would call this historically based fiction. I would not call it something in the vain of ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER. The events Dave Hunsaker wrote about, no way claim this was what happened to Edward Curtis during that specific time, but the story is woven very tightly around what we do know, and we immersed ourselves in Curtis? life to try and have those conversations in our own heads that Curtis, and his daughter Beth, and Hunt may have had, based on that.

As for The-Cannibal-At-The-End-Of-The-World myth, that?s all based on the myth, and our speculation, and thus fiction. What would a man do when faced with a giant Raven God? Again, fiction, but based on what we know of Curtis, and his obsessive nature, it?s safe to say he would take that journey I am sure.

PROF: Curtis came under criticism during his life and afterward. Is this going to deal directly with any of those more controversial aspects or leave that to the historians?

CS: I have my own opinions, but leave that debate to the historians. Our book touches on that only lightly.

PROF: The sample images are darkly foreboding with a true sense of horror. Is that the tone you set out for on purpose, or did it evolve organically as you started visually putting it together?

CS: I knew from the beginning how I wanted to approach the book, and then that promptly vanished after our research trip. I took it one page at a time. I did plan the overall tonal shift as Curtis went from Arizona to British Columbia, but after that, I found myself very much in uncharted territory. I worked very long hours, and at times I had it, at other times, I felt I was chasing what I wanted, and it was always just out of reach.

PROF: What philosophical and emotional themes are you examining?

CS: Man against nature?

Man against man?

Certainly, it was man against himself.

There were scenes where Curtis seemed almost doomed to me, his quest not unlike a search for the mythical Holy Grail. Madness, the quest of a truth, and the obsession of understanding what came before the modern, what shaped us into the species we are now. When Curtis descends under the waterfall, to the bottom of the lake in the Hamatsa initiation, is this Dante? Is this penitence? In the Greek Mysteries, initiation connoted not a "beginning" (initia), but the opposite: "finishing." In this part of the story, Curtis was facing darkness, a final truth, The-Cannibal-At-The-End-Of-The-World. That for me, was our ancestral truth, the horror we overcame to become what we are now. Under that water Curtis would face The Ancestors.

PROF: How long have you actually been working on it?

CS: I think, from beginning to end, almost two years. If you count the publishing side, the principle art took a year. I think my original estimate was 6 to 8 months.

PROF: Just because I?m always curious about how each artist approaches putting pen or paint to paper, can you describe your medium and technique a little bit -- give the readers insight into how Chris Shy works when he takes a blank canvas and builds a world?

CS: Every book is different. I use tempura, watercolor, and photography. I print some things out, then over paint, then scan them, and over paint again. For some of the scenes in this, I used a certain shot that Curtis took, but used it for the middle, and painted everything outside of it, the unseen background. I wanted to bring him to life. Beth, his daughter, I loved painting. I only had one good photo of her. I kept one of Beth, and a Curtis photo of an Apache girl from 1903 on my desk during the project. I often blended the two together for my work on Beth.

PROF: Do you block and pace the story before you start ruminating on what designs, colors, and textures will best serve the story?

CS: I read and thumbnail pages as I go. I read it several times, sketching each page out very small. Pacing is very important. I don?t concern myself with page count. It takes what it will take to do it right. If a project is 96 written pages, I let the story unwind according to how long I feel it must be. Certain things need to be uncompressed. It?s one of few precious things we can still do in this medium. Let it be. Just let it become what it must.

PROF: Your painting and storytelling style are evocative of a strong synthesis of fine art with graphic storytelling. That's such a truly rare fusion. Graphic storytelling, as a commercial art, has tended to be driven more by pragmatic art techniques mainly to increase speed and reproduction. The advent of the modern notion of graphic novels as literature and a business that has come to embrace more time-consuming and expensive mediums and techniques has laid the groundwork for someone like you to create beautiful and haunting works of art that also tell stories. Is it more your heart to touch emotions through painted imagery or through the flow of your unique way of storytelling? Or do you see this as an impossible separation?

CS: It?s impossible to separate it. I have always been a Comic Book artist. I was doing comics when I was 8. It has been, and always will be my true love. The story pushes you into creation of a world, and the art brings it into focus, and it is the force of creating every scene, based off that story, has always made me a better artist, and storyteller I do fine art, gallery work, but all that comes from doing graphic novels. I have never done monthlies, I search out complete stories, and paint them from beginning to end.

For me, it?s the only way. I think they call us ?Graphic Novelist? now, but I was always proud of just being a comic book artist. It?s a unique job, a tough job, and not a job easily explained to anyone outside of those who do it. I have completed 14 books, and I have immersed myself in each one of them. Approached each with no rules based on previous work, or experience. I may have a style, but I always try and shake it on each one. Sometimes I am successful, sometimes I fail, I have a marvelous team I work with, who bust me if my panel structure gets too confusing, or my art gets a bit abstract.

My production manager, Emmelee Pearson, Editor Kevin Stein, I depend on them. If something gets too esoteric, if it isn?t smooth they gut me like a fish. I need that. Two hundred and fifty pages into a book, is like Alice slipping down the rabbit whole. Each book is a war, a struggle, and a unique level of abstract thinking. My team keeps me sane.

PROF: When do you know you are done?

CS: It?s never done, in my opinion, but I am very good at knowing how long it?s going to take, to get those pages completed. I try and build in a month or so for polish, and as I have said I thumbnail, essential for coming in on deadline.

PROF: Do you find yourself going back to the work and tweaking it or are you easily able to step away and move on to the next thing?

CS: Yes, I do spend about a month going page to page, doing my own art changes. Then I invite my team to read through and tell me where I went off the rails. I always do a certain amount of concept art. I can always tell when a book has been a tough ride, based on how many pieces I have had to do to work out a sequence. THE NORTH END OF THE WORLD took hundreds.

Once a book is done, I try and move on to something completely different. I usually can switch gears pretty fast. I like to take a month or so off between each book, if possible.

PROF: What is your involvement on the actual design and production of the printed version of the book itself? I know some artists, just hand it off and wait. Are you involved in the technical side of production as well?

CS: Yes, from the very beginning, back in the 1990?s Studio Ronin began handling the layout and production of all of our books, and this was no exception. I have a very precise idea of how I want a book laid out. I like to ease into a story a certain way, and ease out. I open, and close a story with as many pages as I feel necessary for this to stand on its own. I don?t like house ads, I like the credits to be presented a certain way, I like everyone working on a book to get their credit. I have fought some very bloody battles for Studio Ronin and BlackWatch to get the credit they deserve. It?s a team that has been working together for a long time. We think the same, argue the same, and are very truthful and caring about what we do. For us, this is making the best novel we can, a film on paper, when adapting a script. This is our life?s work.

PROF: The aspects of your art that resonate with me is that it always moves me emotionally but also there are marks of intelligence in all of it -- something almost archetypal or mythological -- whether it is based in familiar reality or drawn from the suppressed imaginations of our nightmares. Not every artist is able to combine the intangibles of intelligence and emotion in each image. Is this planned on your part or just something that happens without your conscious knowledge?

CS: I am always aware of it. I have always been fascinated by myths, the beginnings of man, the rites of passage, and rituals, the countless stories of The Dying God, Indian Culture. These are the great heritage of everything that came before us, and the basis for all of our ability to Story Tell. Isis, Osiris, Demeter and Persephone, Moses, Christ.. Every character is abandoned, a reluctant king, a Dying God, a Sacrificial Hero. In my mind, Curtis was yet another, who sacrificed something for those he loved. Elements of Christ, elements of Ananke, obsession, all stories are told and retold. The Devil is in the details. Dave Hunsaker wrote an amazing story. David Skinner gave me the freedom to approach it the way I wanted. They worked long before me, on this, and I worked very hard to find things in this they had not found.

PROF: What?s next for Chris Shy?

CS: I just finished another novel set in the DEADSPACE Universe, loved doing that, and just returned from a place called Madeline Island for a new trilogy I am working on called I SLEEP IN STONE.

PROF: Thanks again for taking the time to talk to me, my friend. I look forward to talking to you again, soon.
