Joan Rivers unapologetic over Holocaust joke

By Randee Dawn, TODAY contributor

Don't expect Joan Rivers to back down over a joke. The acerbic 79-year old comedienne and host of E!'s "Fashion Police" refuses to apologize for comments made on her show's post-Oscars wrap-up Monday.

"The last time a German looked this hot was when they were pushing Jews into ovens," she noted then, referring to a dress "Project Runway" host and model Heidi Klum wore at the Academy Awards.

But on HLN's "Showbiz Tonight," she backed up the comment. "It's a joke, No. 1," she told host A.J. Hammer. "No. 2, it is about the Holocaust. This is the way I remind people about the Holocaust. I do it through humor.... Your generation doesn't even know what I'm talking about.... Didn't bother Heidi, doesn't bother me."

When she was asked about offering an apology, she asked back, "For what? Why don't you worry about Mel Gibson? Why aren't you worried about the anti-Semites out there, and not pick someone who doesn't have a single living relative, hmm?"

Rivers says comedy is how she deals with the tougher aspects of daily living. "I think that's how we get through life," she said. "You make people laugh, you laugh, you can deal with it. Done."
