Israel Wayne, author of Full-Time Parenting, is best known as an author and keynote speaker at homeschooling conferences. But Full-Time Parenting?isn?t exactly a homeschooling book. While homeschooling is a reference to the academic portion of a child?s education, Wayne?s focus is broader. He takes Deuteronomy 6, which instructs parents to use every waking moment to disciple their children, and explores what that might look like in a modern context. The book?s scope ranges from practical child-rearing and marriage advice to extended treatments of the impacts of pop culture, technology, and home businesses on family discipleship.
His wife, Brook, contributes a portion of a chapter specifically directed to wives and mothers, and also adds a chapter on living on one income. His mother, Skeet Savage, adds a second guest chapter, discussing from first-hand experience what full-time parenting looks like for single parents.
The portion of the book which deals with advice to married couples is too detailed for young children (but appropriate for many teenagers.)
This book?s scope is so broad that practically every reader will find passages that make him or her uncomfortable. But, in a sense, that is its purpose. The homeschooling movement has been criticized for getting into the rut of focusing too much on the academic portion of training children. Full-Time Parenting?is a timely modern-day application of Scripture?s timeless precepts.
